How to become a Chartered Market Technician (CMT)

The CMT charter is the main professional credential in technical analysis. You earn it by passing three exams run by the CMT Association, then joining the Association and meeting its work-experience requirement. Most candidates take 18 months to 3 years. Here is the path, what it costs and how long to study.

The three exams

Study hours are the CMT Association's suggestion for candidates with a degree and relevant work experience.

  1. Enroll in the CMT Program (a one-time enrollment fee, US$250 in 2026).
  2. Register for Level I in a June or December window. Register early: fees rise from the early to the standard and late windows.
  3. Study the official curriculum included with registration, then practise exam-style questions and timed mocks.
  4. Sit the exam at a Prometric test center or by ProProctor remote proctoring.
  5. Pass Level I, then Level II, then Level III, one level per window.
  6. Apply for CMT Association membership with sponsor references and meet the work-experience requirement to use the designation.

What it costs

In 2026 the CMT Association listed exam registration at about US$875 in the early window, US$1,075 standard and US$1,475 late, per level, with the official curriculum included, plus the US$250 enrollment fee. Some firms and academic partners get reduced rates. Budget roughly US$3,000 to US$5,000 for all three levels, depending on when you register. Always check the current fees on the CMT Association website.
